Stolen light, sharp eyes and a CBD chase: Eight arrested in Hermanus theft blitz

A stolen outside light, suspicious CCTV footage and a chase through the Hermanus CBD led to the arrest of eight suspects in a string of theft and shoplifting incidents in July and August.

The arrests were made by members of Hermanus Public Protection (HPP), a ratepayer-funded community-safety initiative with operational support from Fidelity ADT, before the suspects were handed over to the police.

One of the most notable arrests followed the theft of an outside light from a Hermanus property late on 28 July. Although an initial search failed to locate the suspects an HPP officer spotted a man matching the description during a routine patrol the next morning.

“On stopping the suspect and questioning him the male confirmed that he did steal the light the night before,” said Marius Boshoff, Hermanus Branch Manager for Fidelity ADT. “He then took the officer to the location at which he had hidden the light.”

The suspect was taken to the Hermanus Police Station, where a theft case was opened.

On 1 August, a vigilant HPP CCTV operator noticed two men carrying heavy bags into Swartdam Road from Zwelihle. Officers stopped and questioned them, finding a 5 kg gas bottle and tools in their possession.

“When questioned further they could not provide the officer with a reasonable explanation as to where they got these items from,” Boshoff said.

Both men were arrested for possession of suspected stolen property.

Shoplifting incidents

HPP also assisted in two shoplifting incidents. On 22 July officers chased and detained a suspect who allegedly stole clothing from a store in the CBD.

On 30 July CCTV operators tracked two women and two men believed to be operating as a coordinated shoplifting group. Clothing worth R2 740 was recovered before the group was arrested.

“We commend all HPP members for their hard work and efforts,” Boshoff said. “HPP remains dedicated to protecting the Hermanus community through rapid response, collaboration with the police, and vigilant crime prevention efforts.”
