STELLENBOSCH – Stellenbosch University (SU) is investigating an incident in which a group of students were seen indecently exposed on campus on Tuesday evening.
SU spokesperson Martin Viljoen confirmed that the university was aware of the incident. However, he could not provide further details while it established the facts.
Reports indicate that male students ran naked across campus during the evening of 13 October. Nevertheless, the university has not confirmed the alleged nudity or provided details about the circumstances.
University’s response
“SU takes seriously any conduct that may compromise the dignity, safety or sense of belonging of members of its campus community,” Viljoen said.
He added that maintaining a safe and inclusive environment for students and staff remained a priority.
The university said it would deal with the matter in accordance with its applicable policies and procedures. This includes disciplinary processes where appropriate, and “with due regard for the rights of all involved”.
Details still unclear
SU has not disclosed how many students were involved or identified the residence where the incident occurred. It has also not confirmed whether formal disciplinary proceedings have been initiated.
The university has also not clarified whether the incident was linked to any residence or an organised student activity.
“As the process is at an early stage, SU will not comment further at this time,” Viljoen said.
It remains unclear what prompted the incident or whether any complaints have been lodged by students, staff, or members of the public. In addition, the university has not indicated when its fact-finding process is expected to be completed.
