Business owners should report demands for “protection money” to the extortion hotline.

The Zwelihle business community has been left reeling after an Egyptian shop owner was gunned down in cold blood by two men who allegedly demanded protection money from him.

Captain Fadila September, spokesperson for Hermanus police, reports that the two assailants entered Jabz Shop in Kamana Street, Zwelihle at about 21:30 on Friday 5 May.

“The deceased, who has been identified as Eslan Hassan Abdelnaby Angun, and a friend were in the shop, when two males entered.

“They allegedly demanded protection money.

“The deceased reportedly ran to fetch a gas pistol after one of the suspects fired a shot into the floor,” September related.

“The deceased fired two shots with the gas pistol. The suspect fired two shots at Angun, hitting him in the right upper arm and in the chest. The suspects then ran away.”

The badly injured Egyptian shopkeeper was taken to Hermanus Provincial Hospital, where he succumbed to his wounds.

The police have urged shop owners not to pay extortion money to criminals, but to rather report the extortion to the local police or on the toll free Extortion hotline at 0800 31 44 44.

No arrests in connection with Angun’s murder have been made. Anyone with information can contact the Hermanus Police on 028 313 5300.
