Most of us living in Hermanus, or visiting as tourists, know and enjoy the beautiful Cliff Path that stretches from the New Harbour to Grotto Beach. What most of us probably do not know, is who is responsible for the maintenance of this Hermanus icon.

The Cliff Path Management Group, a voluntary association passionate about the Cliff Path, is currently in co-operation with the Overstrand Municipality, responsible for the maintenance of the Cliff Path.

The Cliff Path Management Group works under a co-management agreement with the Environmental Management department of the Overstrand Municipality and within the Fernkloof Nature Reserve Management Plan. Historically, David Beattie, then chair of the Cliff Path Management Group, raised substantial funds for the Cliff Path. Unfortunately, the Municipality, currently being under financial and resource constraints, is not in a position to assist to the same extent as was previously possible.

The Cliff Path Management Group is currently in dire need of public donations and funding for the average monthly path maintenance (budgeted at R45 000), which includes cutting of hedges and resurfacing or repairing of the concrete path. Apart from the monthly maintenance costs, there are special projects needed from time to time, like the Kraal Rock to Langbaai section of the path’s aggregate surface that needs to be redone in certain areas at an approximate cost of R200 000.
