The Western Cape Minister of Mobility, Ricardo Mackenzie, has commended a provincial traffic officer for his diligence after abalone worth an estimated R1,8 million was confiscated.
The traffic officer pulled a vehicle to the side of the road near Grabouw on Friday 23 June, when he noticed a large number of black plastic bags inside the car. Closer inspection revealed the 24 bags contained 3 731 units of abalone with an estimated value of R1,8 million.
The driver fled the scene. The case was reported to Grabouw police for further investigation.
MacKenzie said: “I commend the Provincial Traffic Services for its continued effort to stop Western Cape roads from being used to transport illegal goods and making our roads safer.
“This incident and many others demonstrate the good work being done by our officers who work around the clock to ensure illegal substances are seized before they get to our communities.”
