Molemo Katleho Maarohanye, popularly known as “Jub Jub” will reappear in court on 24 August after his case was postponed pending investigation.
Maarohanye, who was is out on bail, made his first appearance in the Germiston Magistrates’ Court today on charges of discharging a firearm in an incident that took place in a public place and pointing anything likely to lead a person to believe that it is a firearm, according to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).
The incident occured in Edenvale on 14 June and involves an e-hailing driver. A pellet gun was subsequently seized from Maarohanye’s residence during investigation.
Maarohanye is no stranger to court appearances with a history of criminal activity dating back from 2010. He and Themba Shabalala were found guilty of murder, attempted murder, driving under the influence of drugs and racing on a public road in 2012. He later successfully appealed the charges before his release in 2017, after just four years in prison.
In 2022, he was accused of physical and sexual abuse by South African actress and media personality Amanda du-Pont, while other women made accusations against him as well.
He handed himself over to police in 2023 and was faced 13 criminal charges, including rape, indecent assault and attempted murder. However, the NPA withdrew the case citing no reasonable prospects of successful prosecution.
His most recent charge is on allegations that he forced an e-hailing driver into a vehicle (kindapping), threatened and interogated him, fired a firearm in his direction and prevented him from leaving.
He was released on bail by the Gauteng Division of the High Court in Johannesburg on 6 June.
