Authorities kept a close eye when more than 1 000 protesters marched from Zwelihle to the Overstrand municipal offices in Hermanus last Thursday (9 February). Residents of Zwelihle and members of the Land Party took to the streets and marched to the municipality to hand a memorandum over to Overstrand Executive Mayor Dr Annelie Rabie. The municipality confirmed that the Mayor had to cut a meeting with parents of unplaced learners at Qhayiya Secondary School short to accept the memorandum with a number of demands from the protesters. Local police, Overstrand Law Enforcement and Traffic and Public Order Police officials escorted the protesters from Zwelihle to Hermanus and back to Zwelihle. One of the demands was that a moratorium should be placed on all sales of land. Rabie indicated she would respond to the demands made in the memorandum by 20 February. “The demands of the Land Party are of such a nature that it requires the full council to resolve on them, hence I could not reply immediately as requested by the protestors,” Rabie stated.
