Cholera raging in Gauteng and the Free State has brought the value of good drinking water to the fore.

The Department of Water & Sanitation (DWS) recommends municipalities periodically publish information on the quality of drinking water supplied to consumers.

“Overstrand Municipal Manager Dean O’Neill reports the municipality has nine water treatment plants, and the tests were from October 2022 to March 2023. “Water samples are collected monthly by an accredited laboratory where different bacteriological, chemical and physical parameters are measured,” he said. He added that Overstrand Municipality’s water quality is outstanding, “with 100% of the average results complying with Code 0241 as set by the South African National Standards (SANS) for drinking water.”
