Overstrand Municipality is in the process of replacing some streetlights with more energy efficient light-emitting diode (LED) lights in Kleinmond, Hawston, Hermanus, Stanford and Gansbaai.

Approximately 836 LED streetlights have already been installed to date.

This project is funded by the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy and targets reduced electricity usage within the municipal operations, focused on retrofitting existing streetlights, traffic lights and building lights with energy saving devices.

A grant of R3 million was received for the 2022-’23 financial year.

With LED technology up to 62% savings in energy consumption can be achieved. Replacing traditional streetlights in Overstrand Municipality with LED’s will ensure a saving of 70 tonnes of coal a year.

Not only are the new energy saving LED streetlights brighter, but their energy consumption is significantly lower and less maintenance is required.
