Tourists from America, Namibia, Ireland, the Netherlands and various other overseas countries were among the 245 visitors who climbed to the top of the Danger Point Lighthouse over the four days the lighthouse was open to the public, from 27 June to 1 July. The volunteers on duty shared the story of HMS Birkenhead, which sank off the coast of Danger Point on 26 February 1852, and provided information about the lighthouse, which serves as a working memorial for the victims and survivors of the Birkenhead disaster. Some visitors also took advantage of the good weather to explore the blow hole or take a walk along the rocks. The next open weekend will be from 27 and 28 July. Entrance to the grounds is free and gates are open from 10:00 to 14:45. Climbing to the top of the lighthouse is free for children under 10, those between age 10 and 17 pay R10, and it costs R20 for adults. Refreshments will be sold. Call 072 2915564 for more info.
