The late Director Neville Michaels.

The Overstrand Municipality is grieving the loss of one of its most respected leaders, as Neville Michaels leaves behind a legacy of unwavering service, integrity, and genuine care for his community. Michaels lost his battle against cancer.

For nearly 16 years, Michaels was more than just a municipal director – he was a pillar of strength, a mentor to many, and a true gentleman whose dedication to public safety touched countless lives across the Overstrand.

From fire stations to traffic intersections, from disaster response teams to security operations, his influence shaped every aspect of municipal public safety. But beyond his professional achievements, it was his character – his kindness, his wisdom, and his ability to lead with both authority and compassion – that truly set him apart.

“It is with deep sorrow and shock that the passing of Director Neville Michaels has been received. Michaels had served as the Director of Protection Services (now Directorate: Municipal Public Safety) at Overstrand Municipality since 1 December 2008. The contribution Michaels made to the municipality is held in very high regard,” the Municipal Manager Dean O’Neill said.

The Executive Mayor and Council and Directors, colleagues, as well as the community, extend their condolences and heartfelt sympathy to his wife Tania, daughters Nadine and Michelle, and the family. “His memory is especially honoured by the staff of municipal public safety, where he was head of Fire and Disaster Management Services, Law Enforcement, Traffic Services, and Security Services,” O’Neill said. “Saluut, Meneer – you’ll be remembered with love, laughter and deep respect.
