Mlungiseleli Gobikantshi (29) will serve 15 years behind bars after being convicted of Mzuvukile Saba’s murder.
Lieutenant-Colonel Winston Coetzee, commander of the Gansbaai Police Station, commended the hard work of the investigating officer, Sergeant Ronel Pieterse, and the prosecution, which helped secure the lengthy sentence.
Gobikantshi was convicted of and sentenced for the murder in the Hermanus Regional Court on Tuesday 7 March.
He was arrested on 13 April 2019, hours after stabbing Saba in the neck during an argument. The victim succumbed to his injuries a short while later.
Coetzee lauded the investigating officer, prosecutor and judicial service for the “well-deserved, lengthy sentence”.
He added: “We as the police will come down hard on criminals who threaten the safety and well-being of our society, and the hope is that this sentence will serve as a deterrent and prove crime doesn’t pay.”
