TWK Executive Mayor Tienie Zimmerman cut the ribbon at the official opening of the Bereaville Library while various dignitaries looked on.

The community of Bereaville, on the outskirts of Genadendal, celebrated a significant milestone when Theewaterskloof Executive Mayor Tienie Zimmerman opened the Bereaville Library last week.

The Theewaterskloof Municipality said in a statement this multi-functional library is the result of a collaborative partnership that will address the educational and recreational needs of this remote area.

The library project was made possible through a partnership between the Moravian Church, which generously made the land available, the Western Cape Education Department and the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (Provincial Libraries), which provided funding.

“The TWK Department of Sustainable Development played a key role in ensuring the project’s implementation, making this an example of teamwork and collaboration in action,” the municipality said.

At the official opening Zimmermann reflected on the significance of the project. “This library is more than just a building with books,” he said. “It is a place of recreation, education, and access to the internet, levelling the playing field for the people of Bereaville.

“Whether you are the young learner seeking knowledge, the job seeker accessing opportunities or the community member looking for a space to connect, I hope this library offers you hope and the chance to dream big.”

The Mayor also highlighted the broader impact of libraries on rural communities. “Libraries hold a special place in our communities. They are not merely spaces for books, but hubs of learning, growth, and social interaction. In rural areas like Bereaville, libraries play an even more crucial role.

“They provide essential access to education, technology and information, bridging the gap for communities that are often underserved.”

With its dual-purpose functionality, the library will provide access to a range of educational and recreational resources, helping to improve the lives of Bereaville residents and offering much-needed space for growth and opportunity.
