Being born on 29 February is very rare. Statistics show there is only a one in 1 461 chance of being born on this date. This means that a Leap Year baby is more rare than an albino peacock.

Babies born on this day are called “Leaplings”. The fact that 29 February only appears on our calenders once every four years means most celebrate their birthday on February 28 or 1 March.

The Health and Wellness Department in the Overberg District was excited to announce that a total of 11 babies – six girls, five boys – were born in the district on Thursday 29 February.

Caledon Hospital welcomed four Leap Day babies (two boys and two girls), while two baby girls and one baby boy were born at Otto du Plessis Hospital in Bredasdorp on Thursday 29 February. Swellendam and Hermanus Hospitals each welcomed one boy and one girl into this world on Leap Year day.

Roché Laws, spokesperson for the Department of Health and Wellness in the Overberg District, congratulated the parents on the safe delivery of the new arrivals. She added: “As the Health and Wellness Department we look forward to being a part of their development journey.”
