Ladles of Love was founded nine years ago in Cape Town by Danny Diliberto.

The NPO has gone from being a single soup kitchen serving 70 meals a day to one of the most prolific food-charity organisations in South Africa. Today, Ladles of Love supports numerous other community kitchens, schools, social enterprises and NPOs with much-needed groceries and support.

Benefactors and patrons of the charity organisation Bernard and Hilary Stern, with the blessing of the Ladles of Love, have now committed themselves to expanding the organisation by launching a satellite operation in the Overberg. The focus will be on providing nutrition and support to children in need at early-childhood development (ECD) centres, with help from local businesses, individuals and NPOs.

Ladles of Love is asking people in the Overberg to volunteer 67 minutes of their time on Mandela Day (Tuesday 18 July) to make sandwiches.

It will host events at multiple locations in South Africa, aiming to set an Ubuntu World Record on Mandela Day for “the highest number of volunteers doing 67 minutes to make items to nurture, nourish and grow children at ECD Centres in impoverished communities.”

The cost to volunteer is R150 per person and all the funds raised will go towards supporting ECD centres in the Overberg. To register, go to www.webtickets.co.za and search for “Ladles of Love Mandela Day 2023 – Hermanus”.
