Outgoing committee members, Roeleen Wessels and Michele Serfontein enjoy the evening.

The saying goes: “If you want something said ask a man, if you want something done ask a woman . . .”

And this is exactly what the women of Lighthouse 2 Lighthouse (L2L) proved. The press release stated: “Our L2L 2024 ended on 25 April at the awards evening with a celebration of funds raised, kilometres walked and the joy of walking. All this in only one night.”

The evening that was held at the Hermanus Golf Club was attended by just over 100 walkers, supporters, sponsors and stakeholders.

Outgoing committee members Roeleen Wessels and Michele Serfontein were the duo guiding the guests through the programme of fun, laughter and tears.

The highlight of the evening was when they announced the final amount raised by L2L 2024.

“The money raised by the 107 registered L2L as well as the eight SteerCo members (through Silly Socks Day, Twilight Walk, merchandise sales and the raffle) culminated in a first in the history of Lighthouse 2 Lighthouse Ladies,” a press release said. “They raised more than R1,2 million for our main beneficiary Overstrand Hospice.

“The monies raised during our 34 wonderful Wednesday walks and six practice walks made it possible to donate R30 021 (each) to Huis Lettie Theron and Kleinmond Animal Welfare Services (Kaws).”

According to the women they are forever grateful to their sponsors. “Their generosity makes it possible to treat our registered walkers, without whom we would not be able to raise funds,” the press release stated. “Every registered walker needs to raise a minimum of R5 000 each. Their efforts make it possible to raise more than the minimum – we were able to more than double the R500 000 that 100 walkers would’ve raised.

“We are so grateful – our hearts are overflowing – for your support, generosity and eagerness to participate in our walks and our fundraising events. Thank you for joining us early on Wednesdays, for sacrificing your Sunday morning lie-ins to join us on our monthly Practice Walks and for all your efforts to help us bring light to the Overstrand. Your small (or big) contribution has made it possible for us to make a big difference. Thank you. Until next year – keep on walking . . .”. The top fundraisier for 2024: Carol-Ann Connel who raised more than R50 000.. The most L2L kilometers walked were completed by Judy Roberts and Karin Butler. This included six practice walks, 34 Wednesday walks, Twilight Walk and the official L2L Walk (approximately 600 km).
