The police in Grabouw are trying to establish the identity of a man who was assaulted and set alight in an incident of mob justice last week.
Brigadier Donovan Heilbron, Deputy District Commissioner of the police in the Overberg, confirmed that the police were called out to the scene in Ou Kaapse Weg on Thursday 30 May.
He said: “When authorities arrived at the scene on an open field, they discovered the lifeless body of an unknown male lying on his stomach. The victim had been badly assaulted and was also set alight.
“It is rumoured that the community accused the victim of breaking in but there were no reports of burglaries or break-ins in that area shortly before the incident.
Heilbron cautioned the community not to take the law into their own hands and became involved in incidents of mob justice as this could lead to criminal charges against them.
“Please report crime to the police and let the law run its course,” he urged.
- Anyone with information that could help to identify the victim or could lead to arrests can call the station commander Col Winston Coetzee on 082 559 4601 or the head of detectives, Lt Col Pieter de Kock on 021 859 7700.
