Jacob Ndlovu was one of the many happy customers who purchased fresh produce from a local community garden at the previous Shoprite and Checkers Market Day.

Fresh and organically grown produce from 35 community food gardens in the country will be available for purchase directly to the public at selected Shoprite and Checkers supermarkets on Wednesday 7 June.

The Mthimkhulu Community Development Programme in Kleinmond is one of these community food gardens that will participate.

Sanjeev Raghubir, Sustainability Manager at the Shoprite Group, said: ““By improving food security in the communities that we are a part of, we are almost making these communities more adaptive and resilient to a changing climate.

“For the first time since Market Day’s inception in 2017, community food gardens in Lesotho will also be selling their produce directly to the public. We’re very excited that Market Day keeps expanding and that we continue to support community food gardens to create sustainable livelihood opportunities in more ways.”
