Join the Hermanus Astronomy Centre (HAC) members as they uncover the mysteries of the Southern Cross during a special talk by Dr Jenny Morris.
HAC will meet at the Onrus Manor Clubhouse on Tuesday 16 January from 18:00-19:00 for the talk entitled “The Story of an Earthly Wobble and a Starry Icon”. The Southern Cross, with its distinctive arrangement of bright stars, is not just a navigational aid; it holds a profound story waiting to be unveiled.
Jenny Morris, a distinguished member of the Hermanus Astronomy Centre, will guide guests through a mesmerising exploration of the physical structure, characteristics and historical significance of this celestial wonder.
She will take those attending on a captivating journey as she unveils the enchanting narrative behind the Southern Cross, a celestial marvel that has fascinated cultures throughout history.
Among the topics to be discussed are the reason the ancient Greeks gazed upon its brilliance, how was it lost, only to be rediscovered by daring European explorers and the celestial wonders that lie hidden within the radiant stars that form its iconic shape.
Guests will discover the rich interpretations of the Southern Cross in indigenous mythology and folklore, uncover its symbolic significance across various countries and cultures, and delve into its profound impact on art, society and human culture. It will also provide the opportunity to learn if this celestial wonder will continue to grace South Africa’s night sky in the future.
