The Secret Garden Art in the Park, presented by Beyond Black Mountain in collaboration with the Caledon Museum, will be held in the Caledon Wildflower Garden on Saturday 25 November.

This arts and culture festival will focus not only on art, music and poetry, but also on the environment, and for this reason it is held in the Wildflower Garden.

The date coincides with what would have been the 102nd birthday of Caledon-born poet PJ Philander and in celebration there will be a focus on his poetry.

He loved the gardens and wrote many poems about it. Other local poets will also attend. An interesting line-up of musicians will perform at the festival, with the main attraction being the well-known Radio Kalahari Orkes who will perform at 14.00.

Other musicians include local gospel singer Wade Brikkels, the marimba band of Swartberg Primary and DJ Blaq.

In addition to the art on display, which this year will include an augmented reality piece by Baz Art, organisers of the IPAF street art festival in Cape Town, there will be food and wine stalls as well.

As the festival coincides with the Great Southern Bioblitz weekend, Ismael Ebrahim of SANBI will lead a botanist walk and GSB hike in the gardens.

Lizël Kimber of BBM says: “There will definitely be something of interest for everybody. It is a family event. PJ Philander’s family is especially excited that this is the second time that he is honoured in Caledon and we are keeping his legacy alive. Quite a few of his family members will attend the festival, and we will send a video of the event to his sons overseas.”

Artists who wish to exhibit and vendors can apply via the website www.beyondblackmountain.co.za.

Tickets, at R150 for adults and R50 for children under 12, are available from Quicket.

The ticket price includes all the activities except food and wine.
