The Bredasdorp Customer Network Centre (CNC) demonstrated their commitment to conserving the environment by protecting the bird life, including the red data bird species especially the Blue Crane and Majestic Cape Griffon, to name a few.

The Overberg region in the Western Cape is home to quite a few threatened avian species and, as a result, the Bredasdorp CNC often encounters wildlife occurrences and very recently had two incidents.

“Eskom in partnership with Avian specialists Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT) investigated these incidents for the best possible measures to mitigate and avoid any further bird electrocutions and mortalities,” a spokesperson for the stakeholder Management and Industry Support Department of the Eskom Distribution Cape Coastal Cluster said. “The employees immediately rose to the occasion and despite the daily challenges of faults, restoration of supply to customers, load shedding and inclement weather implemented the recommendations of the EWT and Eskom representatives to replace the porcelain bobbin on the stay wires with fibre glass and insulate the centre phase jumpers.”

According to spokesperson the employees further covered all the jumpers and installed Nocturnal LED devices. “They made the Bredasdorp Farmers 2 power line completely bird friendly to prevent collisions and electrocutions. Occasionally we receive reports from interested parties such as farmers, bird activists or our very own employees, who make a concerted effort in getting this pertinent information to the Environmental Management team to take swift action.”
