Good-quality clothing at bargain prices, colourful paintings to brighten up your home, stylish costume jewellery, comfy shoes, crockery and bright decor items to beautify your home.

The Bargain Box on the corner of Mitchell and Dirk Street in Hermanus sells all these and so much more.

The cute corner shop has been in operation for ages and used to be run by the Hermanus Rotary Anns. After this organisation was disbanded during the Covid-19 pandemic the shop was taken over by the Rotary Club of Hermanus, the local branch of the world’s largest international non-profit charity organisation.

And the funds raised through the sale of these items are used for various projects of the Rotary Club of Hermanus aimed at improving the lives of the less fortunate members of our communities.

The Rotary Club of Hermanus, said club member Wendy Cundall, joins forces with a number of NGOs in the community and is involved in various projects.

Knitting warm blankets, beanies and cute toys for young patients at the Hermanus Provincial Hospital’s paediatric and premature baby ward and children at Camphill School and Izibusiso Foster Home is one of numerous projects the Rotarians are involved with. They are also closely involved with a number of creches in the area, often take elderly residents on a fun day out and have even sponsored animal food to the Hermanus Animal Welfare Society who in turn distributed it in the surrounding township.

Plans for the future

“The Bargain Box will get a makeover soon with rebranding and refurbishing. The plans for the future include extending the business hours, but for this we need more volunteers who can work in shifts,” Cundall explained.

The shop needs donations of shoes, clothes, toys, glassware, bedlinen, household items, small tools and garden equipment, small pieces of furniture and small electrical items as well as magazines and books. These books and magazines will be distributed to schools and old-age homes in the area.

“We also need volunteers who are willing to help out in the shop as we are planning to extend our operating hours,” Christine stated.

If you want to volunteer at the shop you can call or send a WhatsApp to Carina 076 044 1980 or Chris on 081 487 0381. You can also contact Brian on 083 378 7880 to pick donations up during the shop’s trading hours.
