Hermanus Toyota is as much a part of this coastal town as the Whale Festival and, under the leadership of Johan and Hester van Zyl, this dealership is only going from strength to strength.

Johan and Hester van Zyl have been the owners since 2002, and under their leadership the dealership has won several Toyota SA awards in the Customer Service category.

“We bought this franchise in 2002 and we put our heart and souls into it and as a family business we treat our staff as family too,” Johan said.
He said there were many obstacles on their way to make this Toyota dealership one of the best in South Africa.
“The riots of 2018 and Covid were just some of the obstacles, but thanks to our loyal clients we also overcame them,” Johan said.
“The obstacles only made us as a dealership stronger and stronger, and I can only thank the residents and other clients for their loyal support through the difficult times.”
Community involvement
For the Van Zyl family, community involvement is very important. “We like to be involved in the schools in Hermanus,” says Johan. “Not only are we sponsoring some of the school sport teams, but we are also there for the broader community like churches and the Lighthouse2Lighthouse ladies.”
He believes one should treat staff like family and of the 30 staff members employed at Toyota Hermanus 12 boast more than 10 years of service and 18 more than five years.
Johan’s experience in the motor industry has no equal, and with 35 years of experience he knows what the needs of the clients are and will walk the extra mile for them.
“I believe in doing business in an honourable way,” he said.
“Honesty is a key characteristic in a business because it sets the tone for the kind of work culture one wants to create.”
