For final-year occupational-therapy students from Stellenbosch University, having a fun day at Lukhanyo is a highlight.
Rain couldn’t dampen the Grade 2 fun day at Lukhanyo Primary School held recently by Mikayla van der Merwe and Zama Mawisa.
“This is an event the students run quarterly at the Zwelihle community sports field,” Mawisa explained, “with the aim of providing the foundation-phase learners with the opportunity to develop their gross motor abilities alongside their peers in a fun competitive way.”
Due to unforeseen weather circumstances, the fun day for Term 3 had to be moved to the school hall. “Despite this unfortunate turn of events, the event was a great success thanks to the hard work and dedication of everyone involved. The children thoroughly enjoyed themselves,” said Van der Merwe.
They pointed out that play is essential for children’s learning, and making it fun ensures they learn and develop appropriately. “To make this day special for the Grade 2 learners they each received their own lucky packet and a cup of juice. The winning class shared the joy of victory with a cake to share.
“Although finding sponsors for certain items was challenging, we are grateful for the support we received. A special thank you goes to Rola Motors Gateway Mall for their contributions as well as to Cash and Carry for always lending a helping hand.”
