Youth Day is celebrated annually on 16 June. This year marked the 46th anniversary of the 16 June 1976 student uprising in Soweto when hundreds of youth were shot and killed during a protest. In 1994, the new democratic government declared 16 June as National Youth Day to honour the youth’s contribution during the struggle. Although this is a sad day for many who lost loved ones during the march, others celebrate it with laughter and fun. The Hawston Eco Warriors and TS Birkenhead Cadets organised a fun day where children could enjoy themselves and forget their problems for one day. There were loads of laughter and shouts of encouragement when Overstrand firefighter Shaun MacKay and his colleagues joined the youngsters in the fun. More on page 5. Photo: Bianca Du Plessis
