A 57-year-old bus driver has been arrested for allegedly driving under the influence after a green Volvo bus crashed into a wall in Mount Pleasant.

According to police, the crash occurred at approximately 18:35 on Thursday 3 September at the corner of Angelier Street and Swartdam Road.

Thembakazi Mdukana of provincial police confirmed that the driver was arrested at the scene on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.

The driver sustained injuries in the crash and was subsequently taken to the nearest hospital for medical treatment. He remains under police guard, according to police. No other injuries have been reported in connection with the incident.

It is not yet clear how the bus ended up crashing into the wall, or whether any other vehicles were involved. Owners of the property have not yet confirmed the extent of the damage to the wall or whether the bus was carrying passengers at the time of the crash. The circumstances surrounding the collision remain under investigation.

The incident comes after the bus left the roadway and collided with the wall of the Enlighten Education Trust Hermanus at the intersection. Emergency services responded to the scene.

Enlighten Education Trust Hermanus will give an update in correspondence with Hermanus Times once it has gathered all information regarding the damages and cost of repairs.

Further details, including the results of any blood-alcohol testing and the driver’s expected court appearance, were not immediately available.
