The Overberg Community Trust, with its mission of community development and social and economic upliftment, does exactly what its name says: it assists the Overberg community in many different ways.

The communities that are assisted are situated in the municipal areas of Theewaterskloof, Cape Agulhas, Overstrand and Swellendam. On 23 March successful bursary applicants received their certificates at the Awards Ceremony which was held at the Caledon Casino Hotel & Spa.

Bishop Margaret Vertue of the Diocese of False Bay, under which Anglican churches of Caledon and surrounding Overberg towns fall, was the keynote speaker. She said: “Everything we plan and do, is from the basic truth that we are beloved children of God.”

Vertue said that the world, the nation and the Overberg are fragile. “Yet we hold on to the truth that there is more light in the world than darkness.”

She further reminded the recipients to be mentors for their peers, to foster spiritual awareness in themselves and others and that they were signing up for a long-term commitment. “We need to clearly understand the ethics of being recipients of bursaries. We need to be aware of our role in nation building. You are the present and the future leaders.”
