The boxers of Overstrand Whale Boxing Club (OWBC) have once again excelled and brought home several medals from a number of tournaments held in recent weeks.
OWBC coach Mzi Damesi reported his team had bagged 11 gold and two silver medals at a tournament held in Atlantis last week. The star boxers who brought gold home were Nado Mjongile, Gifl Nokemane, Philasande Papane, Linathi Ntshele, Aviwe Mcinjana, Hlalanathi Jumbile, Yonwaba Mcinjana, Sihle Mathiso, Kolunga Ndleleni, Ahlume Malahle and Siphamandla Damesi. Simamkele Damesi and Sinako Ndlovu bagged silver medals at this event.
Siphamandla Damesi, Sihle Mjongile, Sihle Mathiso and Nado Mjongile also bagged gold when they competed in the Mandela Day Tournament at CPUT.
In addition to this, OWBC boxer Sihle Mjongile once again delivered a star performance and bagged gold in his division (48 kg) for the third consecutive year at the National Boxing Championships held in Durban from 2 to 6 July.
“Sihle was one of only four boxers from the Western Cape who won gold at the Nationals,” Mzi stated proudly. “He first became the national champion in his division in 2022, then again in 2023 and now in 2024. He has a very bright and promising future in boxing.
“OWBC only took two boxers to the nationals because our other boxers were busy with school exams.
“Even though Sihle was not able to participate in the provincial championship because he is one of our three boxers who are busy with matric this year, the provincial coaches requested that I include him on the list of boxers who were to compete at the nationals,” Mzi explained.
Simamkele Damesi, another star boxer of the club, also participated in the national tournament but was eliminated in the second round. Despite this, said Mzi, the club is extremely proud of these boxers and recognises their dedication to the sport.
He added: “As always we want to thank our main sponsors EMS Foundation because without their help we would not be able to achieve what we do.”
