Law enforcement officers from the Overstrand Municipality’s Rapid Response and K9 Unit with the assistance of officials from the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) as well as CapeNature confiscated 96 abalone in a quiet street in Betty’s Bay last week. The officers were on a routine crime-prevention and road policing patrol when they spotted a grey single-cab bakkie with white canopy making a dead stop and a sudden u-turn. After being pursued by law enforcement, the vehicle drove into a cul-de-sac and the driver jumped out and started to run. The officers ran after the driver and managed to catch him. While detaining him the man bit one of the officer’s fingers. The suspect, his bakkie and the abalone were taken to the Kleinmond Police Station, where a case docket was opened against him.
Another poacher bites the dust
