Following the AGM of the Hermanus Night Shelter on Thursday, Ray Hartmann (left), retiring treasurer of the shelter, and Sue Raven, manager, paid a visit on Friday to thank the pupils of the Hermanus Primary School for their donation of much needed items for the shelter. “The learners heard about the fact that homelessness was due to various circumstances,” Raven said. “Very few homeless are criminals. Some have been sent out of their homes because family members can’t cope with them and their problems. Perhaps surprisingly some have even matriculated.” The shelter can accommodate 22 males and 10 females in different sleeping areas. Each guest pays only R10 for a hot shower, hot meal and a clean, warm bed. The Hermanus Primary School decided to continue with the Hug for the Homeless project. At the AGM Hartmann retired as treasurer after eight years’ service. He said these were very special years of his life. Les Abbott, the architect, stood down as chairperson. The shelter requests members of the public with a heart for the homeless to volunteer.
