“It was a privilege to host such an event in Zwelihle. I believe the boxers enjoyed the natural beauty of our town and they will return soon to relax in the Overstrand as visitors.”
So said Overstrand Deputy Mayor Lindile Ntsabo after Hermanus hosted the Western Cape Youth and Elite Boxing Championships in Zwelihle over the weekend.
Approximately 200 talented young boxers from all over the Western Province participated in this elite event that was held at Qhayiya Secondary School.
Mzi Damesi, local boxing coach from the Overstrand Whale Boxing Club, said: “This day was a real extravaganza for the people of Zwelihle. About 600 people attended this event and we are grateful for this support.”
He pointed out that the interest in boxing, especially among children (the boxers of tomorrow) is increasing. “Through boxing we keep children off the streets and away from alcohol and drug abuse.
“They are now participating in a sport that can help them in the future and have a positive impact in their lives.”
The boxers from the Overstrand Whale Boxing Club did extremely well.
“Four of our six boxers won gold, one silver and one bronze,” said Damesi. “We are so proud of them.
“I want to thank the Overstrand Municipality’s Sports Manager for his support as well as Frieda Lloyd, Tourism Manager and the Cape Whale Coast.
“We would also like to thank our main sponsor, the EMS Foundation. Without it we are nothing, because it has helped us since 2019 and at this moment is supporting us in establishing our new gym at the Waldorf School.”
