“All households in baboon-affected areas of the Overstrand must have an animal-proof bin for domestic waste.”
These are the words of Municipal Manager Dean O’Neill after baboons wreaked havoc in certain areas.
“Overstrand Municipality can’t win the battle of effective waste management on its own, so it is imperative that everyone co-operate by using ‘baboon-proof bins’,” he said.
According to the municipal Solid Waste bylaw, non-compliant residents living in baboon-affected areas can be fined up to R1 500 after an official notice has been served.
The declared problem animal areas are Kleinmond (including Arabella), Betty’s Bay, Rooi Els, Pringle Bay, portion of Onrus, Voëlklip, Fernkloof (including the Golf Estate), Hermanus Heights, Eastcliff, Kwaaiwater and a portion of Hawston.
Law Enforcement officers will follow-up on waste-collection days to remind households who do not have an animal-proof container to rectify this situation as soon as possible.
