The police have called on the community to refrain from spreading false information and rumours.

This comes after social media was abuzz yesterday with news that a woman had been raped, killed and her body chopped up before her remains were dumped in a black bag.

Captain Fadila September, spokesperson for Hermanus police, stated a woman’s body had indeed been discovered in a black bag in Still Street on the outskirts of Zwelihle, but it was not chopped up.

“The body of an unknown black woman was found in a black bag about 08:45 on Wednesday 28 June,” she said. “It is estimated the deceased is in her late 30s. The body was intact and not chopped up as people have been saying.”

September added a suspect in his mid-40s had been taken in for questioning after the body of a female was found in Still Street, Hermanus.

“At this stage the victim, who is believed to be in her mid-20s, is still unknown. The District Commissioner, Major-General [Miriam] Mochologi requests the community to come forward and report any missing persons at the nearest police station to assist with the investigation.”

Furthermore, the District Commissioner appealed to the community, generally, to refrain from taking the law into their own hands when incidents of this nature are reported.

“Our sincere gratitude to Law Enforcement for their prompt involvement and the community for assisting the police in identifying the alleged suspect,” Mochologi said.

Currently investigations are underway and the suspect is expected to appear in court in due course.

The police have called on anyone who has a female relative missing who fits the description above to visit Hermanus Police Station or call the Crime Stop number, 08600 10111.
