Large parts of the Overberg experienced lighting and thunderstorms over the weekend. Danielle Butler managed to capture this stunning image of the lightning with her Huawei P30 Lite on Friday 2 February in Onrus, Hermanus. The Hemel-en-Aarde Road was closed for a period over the weekend due to flash flooding as result of the thunder showers. Overstrand Municipality confirmed there were lightning-strike fires in the mountains above the Fernkloof and Salmonsdam nature reserves, and at Baardskeerdersbos. OM Municipal Manager Dean O’Neill confirmed fire services had been alerted to a car on fire in Franskraal and responded, and that lightning had been ruled out as a possible cause. “We can confirm a vehicle was alight in Franskraal, the exact cause unknown. Lightning as a possible cause was eliminated.”Photo: Danielle Butler
