New Main Road for Hermanus – £25,000 available free of interest

Work is expected to start about December next on the construction of the new Main Road for Hermanus.

The new main Road will pass along from the Synagogue down Royal Street, Luyt Street, the golf course into Seventh Street, terminating at the present Forest Officer’s Station.

The Town Clerk (Mr. L. Gordon) explained to a representative of the Hermanus News that the present Main Road was too narrow, and it would be too costly to widen it even if the funds were available.

The Council, he said, had approached the Provincial Administration and was granted the sum of £25,000 free of interest with redemption repayments to be subsidised 90 per cent by the Provincial Administration. This would allow the new road to be built as already indicated. The new road, said Mr. Gordon, would be asphalted, properly cornered and would have asphalt pavements. The new road would include a new 40 foot wide bridge over the Mossel River.
