Cellphones have made photography so much more accessible for everybody. They are small, don’t weigh much, fit into one’s jeans pocket and are easy to use. Basically, one just has to aim and press.

One has a wide range of phones with different cameras, resulting in different results. There are, however, still some basic photographic rules to observe when taking photos with a phone.

Marlon Sauls, Education Officer at the Caledon Museum, and Mitzi Buys, Caledon correspondent for the HermanusTimes, on Saturday 24 February hosted a “Photography 101” workshop for nine Myddleton youths of the Emoji Movement.

A short PowerPoint presentation was made, advice pertaining to composition, lighting, editing and portraiture, among other aspects, was given.

The participants were encouraged to look at objects and subjects from a different angle. The various categories discussed were illustrated with photographs.

After the presentation the youngsters were taken for a short walk through the CBD where they could put into practice what they had just been taught. It was interesting to observe them keenly looking for objects to photograph, applying what they had just learned in the presentation.

The feedback from the participants as well from Emoji Movement has been very positive. Everybody said they really enjoyed the workshop and found it very informative.

Due to time restraints the photos taken during the walk could not be viewed and discussed, but this will be done at a later stage and some positive criticism will be given.

Before the walk the participants received a boerie roll, and before leaving for home they were surprised with a goodie bag filled with all kinds of useful items kindly sponsored by various organisations, businesses and private individuals.

The event was held at the Caledon Museum, which the youngsters found very interesting, as none of them had visited it before.
