Ongoing efforts by the police in the Overberg District bore fruit as a number of firearms and large amounts of drugs were taken off the streets during various operations.
Sergeant Abigail Naidoo, spokesperson for the Overberg Police District, reported that three firearms were confiscated and two suspects arrested in two separate incidents in Zwelihle on 12 April.
In the first incident the Overberg District Task Team seized two firearms and arrested one suspect when they followed up on information about the suspect allegedly being in possession of illicit firearms.
“The weapons were found in the room that the suspect was renting.”
On the same day, at about 07:00, the Overberg District Task Team were busy conducting operations in Zwelihle when they received information about a firearm stored at an address in the area.
“The information was followed up and a firearm with ammunition was confiscated,” Naidoo stated.
“Both suspects have appeared in the Hermanus Magistrates’ Court for illegal possession of firearms and ammunition. The investigations are ongoing.”
Gansbaai police confiscated drugs worth an estimated R32 500 during an operation over the weekend.
Naidoo also confirmed that one suspect had been arrested after tik and Mandrax tablets were found in his possession.
He was expected to appear in the Hermanus Magistrates’ Court on Monday.
Over the weekend Bredasdorp police arrested one suspect for dealing in drugs when they executed a search warrant.
“The police confiscated a large amount of drugs including Mandrax tablets and dagga during the operation,” said Naidoo.
The suspect was due to appear in the Bredasdorp Magistrates’ Court on Monday.
Major General Miriam Mochologi, the Overberg District Police Commissioner, commended the police officials for their swift responses to the tip-offs which led to the arrests and confiscations.
“We encourage the members of the various communities to report any suspected criminal activities to the local police.”
