‘We still love you’: Tributes pour in for Botrivier’s beloved son

He was ten years old, aspired to be a social worker and beloved by his peers, family and community. Now, tributes pour in for Marquin Eathin Bruintjies, Botrivier’s beloved son.

Marquin was the oldest of four children who loved his two sisters and brother and loved making TikToks with them. He died earlier this week after feeling pain is his leg.

His mother, Murque Bruintjies, says that they rushed him to hospital before he took his last breath. The cause of his death is not yet known and an autopsy report is currently being compiled.

However, even in pain and sickness, Marquin never dimmed his smile and still cheered up everyone around him. “He was a cheerful boy and [he] always made people laugh,” says Murque. “He loved making TikToks and was into sports.”

His affection for his siblings was just as strong as his affection for his friends, teachers and peers at Botrivier Primary School. “Marquin was one of my best friends,” one learner and friend recalled while his classmates remembered him as a kind-hearted person who was always happy and showed up for those he cared about.

“He was like a brother to everyone in the class,” said his teacher in a letter honouring his life.

A letter his classmates wrote to him.

A proud athlete and academic achiever

Two years ago, Marquin hurt his leg in a rugby game that left him unable to play any rugby games in future. But this did not diminish his love for the sport. His mother remembers him as a big fan and supporter of rugby.

“He performed well academically and achieved good results during the first term,” recalls his teacher. “In addition to his academic achievements, he was actively involved in athletics, rugby and mini-cricket.” His favourite subject was creative arts.

Botrivier Primary School will remember his legacy of kindnesss, caring and sportsmanship that will live forever in the hearts of his teachers, friends and the entire school community.

“Rest in peace, Marquin. We still love you [and] you will always be remembered and will always have a special place in our hearts,” said his friends, teachers and classmates.
