The chess world is buzzing with excitement as the 2026 Hermanus Chess Club Open Tournament prepares to make its triumphant return, promising the most competitive and lucrative chess event in the Western Cape’s club circuit.
Now entering its fourth year, what began as a local chess initiative has rapidly evolved into a hallmark of excellence that attracts top talent from across South Africa and beyond. The tournament, scheduled for 18 April at Curro Hermanus, has firmly established itself as a must-attend event on the national chess calendar.
This year’s tournament boasts an impressive R50 000 prize fund, the largest ever offered by a Western Cape club event. This substantial investment in chess excellence demonstrates the tournament’s commitment to elevating the standard of competitive play and attracting the country’s finest minds to the boards.
Tournament organisers anticipate participation from titled players, including International Masters and other high-level competitors, ensuring spectators will witness exceptional gameplay at its finest. The calibre of participants continues to rise each year, reflecting the tournament’s growing reputation within SA chess circles.
Beyond the fierce competition, the event promises to be a celebration of chess culture, with close to 300 participants expected along with their families, creating a vibrant atmosphere that showcases the game’s ability to bring communities together.
The Hermanus Chess Club continues to seek sponsorship partners to support this premier event, offering excellent brand visibility opportunities alongside meaningful community investment. For more, contact Willem Geerlings on 087 790 4052.
