Reaching the milestone of 200 free junior clinics at The Pro Shop Express Hermanus is a moment filled with immense pride, joy and gratitude. Here’s Bertie Hoffman with some of the students.

When Bertie Hoffman first started offering free junior golf clinics at The Pro Shop Hermanus he had a simple goal: to give back to his community. Now, 200 clinics later, what began as a modest initiative has blossomed into a cornerstone programme that’s shaping the next generation of golfers along the Western Cape coast.

“Reaching the milestone of 200 free junior clinics is a moment filled with immense pride, joy and gratitude,” said Hoffman, reflecting on the programme’s remarkable journey. “What began as a simple desire to give back has grown into something far more meaningful, a commitment to building a lasting legacy for the young golfers of our community.”

Over the years Hoffman has witnessed hundreds of boys and girls take their very first swings at The Pro Shop Express. The transformation he observes goes far beyond technical improvement. “Some arrive with curiosity, others with nerves, but they all leave with newfound confidence and a sense of belonging,” said Hoffman. “Seeing their faces light up when they hit that first solid shot or master a skill they once thought impossible is a reward that goes far beyond the scorecard.”

For Hoffman the clinics represent much more than golf instruction. “They’re about opening doors, giving young people the chance to grow, to learn discipline, to develop focus and to experience the joy of working towards something meaningful.”

The success of the programme hasn’t been achieved in isolation. Hoffman credits the broader Hermanus community for making each clinic possible.

“Parents, club members, sponsors and volunteers have played an essential role in making every session possible,” he noted. “Their belief in the programme strengthens my own commitment to continually raising the standard and expanding opportunities for the next generation.

“The programme’s philosophy centers on accessibility, ensuring that every child, regardless of background or financial circumstances, has the opportunity to experience golf’s character-building benefits.

“Rather than viewing the 200-clinic milestone as a culmination, Hoffman sees it as a launching pad for continued growth. My goal remains clear: to keep nurturing young talent, to keep inspiring confidence and to keep opening the fairways to a brighter future for our sport.

“If even one child discovers a lifelong love for golf because of these clinics, then every moment invested has been worthwhile. The programme continues to expand its reach, with Hoffman already planning the next phase of development.”

Hoffman vision extends beyond the immediate community, hoping to inspire similar initiatives throughout the region. As The Pro Shop Express Hermanus prepares for its next chapter his message is clear: this is just the beginning. “This milestone marks not an ending, but a beginning, a reminder that the legacy we leave is built one young golfer, one lesson and one act of encouragement at a times. And I couldn’t be more excited for the next 200. The free junior clinics continue to run regularly at The Pro Shop Express Hermanus, with interested families encouraged to contact the facility for more information about upcoming sessions.
