A 24-year-old local cricketer has appeared in court charged with the murder of a Heathfield woman whose death was initially treated as suicide.

Tristan Perez appeared in the Wynberg Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday 25 March charged with the murder of Elana Brooke (46), who was found dead in Heathfield.

According to Sgt Wesley Twigg, a spokesperson for the South African Police Service, police initially treated Brooke’s death as suicide before further investigation led to Perez’s arrest.

The matter was remanded to Wednesday 9 April for a formal bail application.

The Western Province Cricket Association has extended condolences to Brooke’s former husband, David Brooke, and their family. In a statement it described Elana as “a cherished friend of the WPCA family” who regularly supported matches at WSB Newlands.

“Her unwavering support for our senior teams spoke volumes about her passion for the game and her connection to the Western Province cricket community,” the statement read.

The association added that her “impact and spirit will forever remain part of the WPCA community.”
