Gabrielle Union pays tribute to late father at South African wine estate

American actress Gabrielle Union announced that she had buried her father’s ashes on a Cape Town wine farm after visiting the country recently.

On Facebook the 53-year-old Union, who starred in Bring it On (2000), Bad Boys 2 (2003) and Breaking In (2018), wrote “burying my dad’s ashes at a winery in Cape Town, under the very vines we planted together as family just a few years ago” while on a visit to the Klein Goederust Boutique Winery in Franschhoek.

Union wrote that she visited the wine farm a few years ago while celebrating her 50th birthday. In an earlier video she mentions that the farm is black-owned and that its owners have since their last visit become like family. She also takes a tour of the cellar and tastes some of the wine from their harvest.

Burial

In the one-minute-thirty-nine-second-long video posted two days ago Union is seen digging a hole with a shovel, before removing her dad’s ashes from her pocket and placing it carefully in the ground. She holds both hands firmly on the ground for a moment, before being heard saying “may you nourish the ground the way you nourished us”.

She then continues to write a note on a white rock placed near to the ground and pours red wine on it, while sharing the moment with friends.

“May the blessings be bountiful. May the abundance be wrapped in peace, kindness, and consideration. May the legacy continue, Amen,” she said.

Last week she wrote that South Africa stole her heart, while posting photos of her visit to Boulders Beach, AKJP Studio and Klein Goederust.

People Magazine reports that her father, Sylvester Union, died at the age of 81 in April this year after he was diagnosed with dementia.
