The second group of QCTO-accredited Food Service Assistant (food handler) Programme graduates crossed the stage at Bergzicht Training and Development recently.
The programme, funded through the Stellenbosch Municipality’s Youth Skills Development Programme, equips unemployed youth with nationally recognised qualifications and the confidence to pursue meaningful careers in the hospitality industry.
Congratulating the graduates, PR councillor Stephanie Heneke reminded them of the opportunities in the growing hospitality sector.
“The food service industry is one of the fastest-growing sectors of our economy. Every hotel, restaurant, hospital, school, guesthouse and tourism establishment depends on skilled food service professionals. This qualification is far more than a certificate – it is a stepping stone towards economic empowerment and self-sufficiency,” she said.
“Many successful chefs, restaurant owners and hospitality managers started exactly where you are today, with a passion to serve, a willingness to learn and the determination to work hard. As Stellenbosch Municipality, we remain committed to investing in our people because when we invest in skills development, we invest in stronger families, stronger communities and a stronger local economy.”

Brighter futures
Michelle Aalbers of Stellenbosch Municipality emphasised the programme’s importance to local economic development: “The Municipal Youth Skills Development Programme makes a tangible and meaningful contribution to the development of local youth. Its success is measured not only by the number of participants who secure employment and remain employed, but by the remarkable personal transformation that takes place.”
Graduate Sifiso April, who was recognised as the programme’s top achiever, reflected on his journey: “I’m smiling big today because I’m officially a qualified food service assistant. Bergzicht changed me. I arrived scared and unsure of myself, but I leave with skills, confidence and a family who believed in me. Thank you to Stellenbosch Municipality for investing in young people like me. I won’t waste this opportunity.”
High placement rate
Fellow graduate Achumile Ntanzi described the programme as life changing. “This opportunity has helped me grow mentally, physically and emotionally. I feel stronger, more focused and proud to be a role model for others. Thank you for investing in my future.”
Addressing graduates and guests, Nathalie Skippers, social development coordinator of Bergzicht, highlighted the organisation’s commitment to changing lives through skills development.
“Our vision is to enable self-leadership and employability, and this is evident through our 98% placement rate and 84% job retention rate achieved in 2025,” she said.
Many of the graduates have received job offers during their workplace practical training.
