There is a rise in street robberies in Stellenbosch.
According to Stellenbosch police specific hot spots have been identified and locals are warned to be especially careful when in the Plankenburg area, George Blake Street, as well as Luyolo and Makapula Streets in Khayamandi.
It seems it is especially locals walking to work in the morning and returning home in the evenings that are being targeted. Robberies occurs mostly in the morning between 05:00 and 08:00 and in evening hours from 18:00 to 21:00.
Police say robbers are using knives to threaten people to hand over their cellphones and other with personal belongings.
Police are urging residents to avoid walking while distracted by your phone; be sure to scan your surroundings regularly.
Be cautious of people loitering or following you and avoid poorly lit or isolated areas.
Walk in groups when possible. Share your location with a trusted person; and do not make yourself a target by displaying expensive phones, jewelry or cash for would be criminals to see. Also avoid counting money in public.
Keep bags closed and carried securely, preferably across your body. Consider installing a tracking app on your phone.
Avoid routine patterns – same time, same route daily.
If you are confronted by a robber stay calm as sudden movements can escalate the situation.
Do not resist if criminals are armed – property is replaceable, your life is not. Avoid making direct eye contact with the robbers as it may seem threatening, rather comply quickly and clearly.
Observe details discreetly (clothing, direction of escape) only if safe to do so.
After the incident get to a safe place immediately. Report the crime to the nearest police station.
If stolen, be sure to cancel bank cards and block your phone.
Seek medical help if injured and consider trauma counselling if needed.
