Health facilities in the Western Cape welcomed 171 babies on Christmas Day and 132 on New Year’s Day, bringing festive joy to families across the province.

Among the New Year’s Day celebrations was the arrival of a baby girl at Stellenbosch Hospital at 01:38. Weighing 3,2 kg, this bundle of joy made history as the third baby born in the province in 2026 and the first girl to arrive in the new year.

The precious little girl followed two baby boys born at Mowbray Maternity Hospital at midnight and Paarl Hospital three minutes later.

“As we step into a new year, we celebrate the first precious lives born in 2026,” said Mireille Wenger, provincial Health and Wellness minister. “Our focus is on giving every child a strong and healthy start through quality care.”
