Stellenbosch’s cultural calendar was enriched last night as Italian heritage, local wine excellence, and international sport converged in a refined evening hosted at the SMAC Gallery.
The Consul General of Italy in Cape Town, Giulio Mignacca, welcomed guests to a cultural showcase held in conjunction with Italy’s sponsorship of the Investec South African Open Championship, which took place in Stellenbosch during March. The event formed part of a broader initiative to celebrate Italian culture within the local context, highlighting its enduring influence on the region’s social and culinary landscape.
Set within the contemporary spaces of SMAC Gallery — an established platform for cutting-edge South African art —the evening brought together elements of Italian identity through wine, food and visual expression. Guests were introduced to a selection of locally produced Italian-style wines, underscoring the deep connection between Italian winemaking traditions and Stellenbosch’s terroir.

Among the featured producers was Stellenbosch’s George Dalla Cia, of Dalla Cia Wine & Spirit Co., whose presence paid tribute to a legacy spanning over four decades in South African viticulture. Originally from Friuli in northern Italy, his father, Giorgio Dalla Cia, is widely recognised for pioneering Bordeaux-style blends in South Africa. After serving as cellarmaster at Meerlust Estate for 25 years, he established his own label, which remains synonymous with Italian-inspired excellence in the region — most notably through cultivars such as Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon blends.
Stellenbosch‘s Executive Mayor Jeremy Fasser and his wife Mercia attended the evening, expressing support for the cultural exchange and recognising the Italian community’s longstanding contribution to Stellenbosch’s development. Italian immigrants have played a notable role in shaping the town’s agricultural and culinary identity since the mid-20th century, bringing with them a philosophy of craftsmanship, family enterprise, and a deep respect for the land and its produce.
The evening reflected a broader narrative: that Stellenbosch, while distinctly South African, continues to evolve as a meeting point of global cultures. Through events such as this, the town not only celebrates international partnerships but also reinforces its position as a destination where heritage, innovation and community intersect.
As the Investec SA Open continues, the collaboration between sport and culture serves as a reminder that major events extend beyond competition — offering opportunities to connect people, traditions and place in meaningful ways.
