FNB Maties continued their winning form with a 23-12 victory over FNB Wits in an FNB Varsity Cup match at the Danie Craven Stadium in Stellenbosch on Monday evening (4 March).
The men from Stellenbosch have now won two of their three encounters and occupy sixth place on the table. They were on the losing side in their opening match against FNB NWU Eagles (12-23) on Monday 19 February, but overturned things with a 10-15 victory over archrivals FNB UCT Ikeys last Monday (26 February).
This past Monday, Maties drew first blood when Juan Mostert slotted a penalty after an early mistake by Wits. The visitors didn’t wait too long to get on the scoreboard though, with Mark Snyman going over for an unconverted try (3-5).
Just before half-time, the home team won a line-out and drove towards the try-line with Siya Ngubelanga making sure of the five-pointer (8-5).
The Maroon Machine started the second half on fire when a brilliant individual display by Mostert from the 22 m line led to their second try.
The mauling magic of Maties continued when DeWet Marais rounded off a well-executed move to stretch the score to 20-5.
With just over 10 minutes to go and as the rain started to pour down again, Wits got one back when Marno Grobbelaar scored their second try, but it was not enough to overcome the home side.
This coming Monday (11 March), Maties will host FNB UJ, who have yet to record a victory this season.
- The match kicks off at 19:00 and will be live on SuperSport.
