Donation of feminine-hygiene products keeps girls in school

This often leads to them missing important school days, which could lead to poor academic performance and limiting of their academic potential. For this reason, the Cape Winelands District Municipality (CWDM) distributed sanitary towels to girls of more than 30 schools across the district, including Stellenbosch, during August and September. “No girl should have to use toilet paper or newspaper when ‘that time of the month’ comes around, but this is the case for many girls across the district,” said CWDM executive deputy mayor Margie Sampson. “We now find that each year, more and more girls are staying out of school during their period to avoid embarrassing situations, or simply because they don’t have access to proper sanitary pads. The girls at the various schools now have access to safe and hygienic pads that can be collected from assigned teachers, enabling dignity and a sense of control.”
