Apply to cast a special vote during upcoming municipal elections

While election day is on Wednesday 4 November, when all South Africans can vote at the voting stations where they are registered, there is also an opportunity to apply for a special vote to make your mark at your voting station on Monday 2 or Tuesday 3 November.

In order to qualify, voters must apply to the IEC between Monday 21 September and Monday 12 October. “This opportunity to vote on 2 or 3 November is based on the voter applying for a special vote in the period as set out in the Election Timetable,” explained Michael Hendrickse, provincial electoral officer.

“Voters cannot simply walk in to the voting station without having applied and having received a response for the IEC. Only the IEC can receive and approve a special vote application, not any candidate or political party.”

Voters are reminded that for local government elections, a voter can only vote at the voting station in the voting district where they are registered.

  • To apply for a special vote, visit www.elections.org.za or send your ID number to via SMS to 32249 (R1 per sms). Alternatively, collect and submit a completed special vote application form at the local IEC Office.
