The talents of Nancy Rademeyer (pictured) will be showcased at the Drostdy Theatre in the award winning production The Syringa Tree tonight (Thursday 12 May) at 19:00. The play by Pamela Gien, set in 1963, was first staged in 1999. Now, 23 years later, its content remains as fresh and relevant as ever. It tells the story of Elizabeth Grace, a privileged young girl growing up in Johannesburg. After her nanny Salamina gives birth to a daughter, Elizabeth, her family takes responsibility for keeping the baby hidden. As the story progresses she begins to learn the harsh realities of the country in which she lives – a shocking subversion of the innocence of childhood, as she knows it, and growing up poor with limited prospects. Spanning several decades, The Syringa Tree tells the dramatic, heartbreaking and inspiring tale of a young woman’s journey into adulthood. Rademeyer not only plays six-year-old Elizabeth, but also 23 other characters. The production wowed audiences at the National Arts Festival in 2019 and received a Standard Bank Ovation Award. Tickets, available online through Computicket, cost R150 (standard) and R120 (pensioners and students).Foto:
